Gentle Giant / Gentle Giant (1970)

United Kingdom

Progressive Rock, Rock, Art Rock

Founded by the Shulman brothers, Art Rock is based on Simon Dupree with the Big Sound, predecessor of the Progressive Rock band Gentle Giant. There is also a single they released under the name of the Moles. But the original band Gentle Giant was formed precisely in 1970. Founded by Phil, Ray and Derek Shulman, the band included drummer Martin Smith from Simon Dupree, Kerry Minnear, who earned a composition degree from the Academy of Music in 1969, and guitarist Gary Green.

Their debut album showcased extensive arrangements that used counterpoint and polyphony as other rock bands had never done and will ever do. The multi-part singing and the use of classical instruments were parallel to the current scene, only in this aspect they took rock music very far.

They achieved great success with albums released one after another. But Phil Shulman, who is considered the mastermind of the group, left the group due to both the age difference between them and his desire to spend time with his family. Although Phil's departure meant a softer musical understanding and a decrease in the use of acoustic instruments, GG did not break the line.
