The 13th Floor Elevators were one of the first bands to shape of Psychedelic Rock. They are even sometimes credited with the first psy LP ("The Psychedelic Sounds Of"). Still, I don't really warm to them. There's something I don't like about the band. Is it the relatively simply structured songs? Is it the sometimes lousy recording quality (like "Til Then" - a song that would have been hammered out of the speakers by the "Who" in an "appropriate" way)? I'm not sure. After the first two LPs, the "bubble rubber band effect" is slowly but surely worn out. On "Never Another" he's just annoying. The band is a case in itself. Not really "garage" but also far away from the attitudes that were common at the time.

After the first album, 13th Floor Elevators came to the fore a lot. They were now famous. When the tour was over, they returned to Texas. Sutherland was arrested for drug possession and received a curfew out of Texas. Tommy Hall began preparations for the second album. The theme of the album was to collide the idea of a way of enlightenment between Western and Eastern beliefs with drugs. Album recordings took a long time, but the resulting album was truly magnificent.

13th Floor Elevators was founded in Austin, Texas in the mid-60s. They were Tommy Hall, a Philosophy student at the University of Texas, three members of the local band The Lingsmen (Stacy Sutherland, Benny Thurman, and John Ike Walton), and singer Roky Erickson.

The album they recorded was very successful. It's even considered one of the best Psychedelic Rock - Garage Rock albums ever since.
