Bachman-Turner Overdrive / Head On (1975)

Canada

Hard Rock, Boogie Rock, Rock, AOR

After albums whose success charts increased, we can say that the quality of the group decreased a little with this album. The guitar usage and vocals that they used in their first album are starting to get boring with this album. The album isn't bad, but it's not as good as the others. Still, it is one of the albums that should be in the archive.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive / Four Wheel Drive (1975)

Canada

Hard Rock, Boogie Rock, Rock, AOR

Considered as popular Hard Rock, it is the fourth BTO album that has lost its quality but has not lost any of its tempo after Not Fragile, which is considered their best album. I must say that it is one of the best albums of the group, which also showed up on the charts during its period.

Members
Fred Turner (bass, guitar, vocals), Randy Bachman (guitar, vocals, 1973-86, 1988-91), Robbie Bachman (drums, percussion, 1973-79, 1988-2005), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals, 1973-74, 1984-86), Blair Thornton (guitar, 1974-79, 1988-2005), Jim Clench (bass, vocals, 1978-79), Garry Peterson (drums, 1984-86), Randy Murray (lead vocals, 1991-2005)

Bachman-Turner Overdrive / Not Fragile (1974)

Canada

Hard Rock, Boogie Rock, Rock, AOR

Not Fragile is arguably the band's best album. It's tougher and more effective than the first two albums. It's melodicly exuberant. Bass guitar, guitars and vocals are perfectly matched. It turns into an enjoyable album as you listen to it. Perhaps the greatest success of the Canadian band. You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet and Free Wheelin', one after the other, are my favorite songs on the album.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive / Bachman-Turner Overdrive II (1973)

An album that looks better than the first album. Not very good quality, but not bad either. Reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Let It Ride is pretty good. This album shows that the next album will be better.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive / Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1973)

Canada

Hard Rock, Boogie Rock, Rock, AOR

Canadian hard rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive was formed in 1973. They shined with their first album. Not an ideal album for progressive rock listeners. For hard rock lovers, it's not a great album. Gimme your Money Please and Blue Collar are really good songs. A popular album from the popular band of the period.

Wishbone Ash / No Smoke Without Fire (1978)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

After the disastrous album Front Page News that they released in 1977, they must have come to their senses that they recorded this album with a harder style. But the era has started to change and Punk is on the scene now. In this case, they did not stand out much. The songs are much better than the previous album. But not enough.

Wishbone Ash / Front Page News (1977)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

After the great albums at the beginning, it is the worst album of the process that started with Locked In. Too soft. It doesn't sound like the Wishbone Ash album at all. In some places you can hear the guitars, which is the highlight of the band, but that's it.

Wishbone Ash / Locked In (1976)

Although the album has potential, it can't even come close to previous albums. Heavier and slower than them. Not at all like Wishbone Ash. Of course, it is very close to their style, but far below expectations.

The band's concert on BBC Radio 1. It contains songs from the first 3 albums. It is an indication of how good they are in live performance. One of the must-have concert albums in the archive. It was recorded in 1972 but only released in 1991. There is an incredible version of the Phoenix song in this album.

Wishbone Ash / Wishbone Four (1973)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

Released after the band's legendary album Argus, this album is commercially successful, but is inferior in quality to the first 3 albums. In this album, the group got out of the concept idea and focused on single songs. It's not a bad album, but it's not a very good album for Wishbone Ash either.

Wishbone Ash / Argus (1972)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

Without a doubt, Argus is Wishbone Ash's best album. You cannot distinguish between songs on the album. Because they all have their own unique atmosphere. Together they make up an incredibly beautiful album. Although there is much that can be said about it, I will not say it. Wishbone Ash / Pilgrimage (1971)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

It is the second album of Wishbone Ash, who has already made their own way with the first album. It's a different album compared to the first one, and I think it's a little more underrated. But it's never a bad album. Vas Dis, Valediction, The Pligrim and Where Were You Tomorrow are songs that stand out with the use of guitar.

Wishbone Ash / Wishbone Ash (1970)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

Wishbone is Ash's debut album. All the songs are good. Personally, I like Errors of My Way the most. But Handy and Phoenix are among the best songs. Handy is an excellent song that starts with a bass guitar. It's one of those amazing albums you'll never get tired of listening to.

Wishbone Ash / First Light (2007)

United Kingdom

Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock, Blues Rock, AOR

It consists of demo recordings made by Wishbone Ash in 1970 before their debut album. There is not much difference in the parts. But the interesting thing is: They're really good for a band that hasn't even released their first album yet. If you are an archive lover, you should definitely get this album in your archive. The album contains all the tracks from the first album except Phoenix. Also, Alone from the Pilgrimage album is included in this album.

Novalis / Augenblicke (1980)

Germany

Progressive Rock, Symphonic Prog, Art Rock

Novalis decided in 1980 to do justice to the way of working that was then emerging and to change the procedure of songwriting and song creation; that is to say, the joint, night-long working out of the same was a thing of the past. From then on, the musicians wrote their lyrics and music at home for themselves, they met again afterwards to listen to the results (demos) and then to make a selection for further processing. In retrospect, one can say that this approach has had advantages and disadvantages.

One result of the changes were shorter and therefore more compact songs, which can certainly be seen as an act of liberation for the musicians of Novalis...after all, their songs used to last 6 minutes or longer.

On the other hand, as a result, the lightness and looseness was lost a little, and the time for extravagant daydreams was reduced. It was also very clear which musician was behind which song...singer Fred Mühlböck always had a knack for the romantic lyrics and song structures, whereas Lutz Rahn and Detlef Job composed in a completely different, more technical and crisp way.

30 years later, even beginners can still clearly see which musician composed which songs. On the one hand the instrumental songs like the opener "Danmark" or the single release "Cassandra", on the other hand epic, enigmatic and profound pieces like "I haven't learned to love yet" or "As a little boy" that the fans knew, loved and therefore expected from Novalis.

But every band has to be allowed to go through a development process and to change. And all in all, it can be said that this change was worth it. The streamlining has expanded the band's sound, "Augenblicke" has become a fresh and interesting album, entertaining and yet dreamy enough to pause for half an hour and enjoy top-class German-language music.

I say this from the point of view of a music listener who is at home on many construction sites, who has always enjoyed music from home and has always liked to try something new over the years. Perhaps this form of music, the amalgamation of the German language with ballad-like, almost poetic content, is no longer quite up-to-date for today's young audience, but it is precisely in this that one or the other listener may find the appeal of listening to Moments.

I can only recommend trying something different and following other paths, similar to Novalis Anno 1980.

My suggestion to play it is the title "I haven't learned to love yet", the song represents the album very well. Crisp (by Novalis standards) guitar riffs on the one hand and catchy refrains and deep words on the other. Listen for yourself, it's worth it.

Novalis / Flossenengel (1979)

Germany

Progressive Rock, Symphonic Prog, Art Rock

At the helm of the oceanic wind, lapped by lukewarm spray, a blinded fisherman stares in the face of his catch. "An angel with fins," marvels the fisherman, "a star sparkling in chains. Seeing his form," the fisherman trembles, "is like turning darkness into light."
"From what ultimate paradisiacal depths does your splendor penetrate our circle? From what raw wildness does your pride shine so unbroken in being conquered?" ...etc. (from "Flossenangel")

Flossenengel, the concept album by the German and Krautrock band Novalis, released on the Brain label in 1979, was recently reissued by the MIG (Made In Germany) label in a sound-perfect remastered version and now offers all those interested the opportunity to purchase a sought-after masterpiece of German music available at an affordable price. The concept on which the record is based refers to the topic of whaling and nature conservation, which is still relevant today (a whale named Atlanto is caught and later remorsefully released by the fisherman).
Far more interesting than this concept, however, is its musical realization. The band, already known as rock poets for processing old works by the writer and philosopher Novalis (Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg, 1772-1801), strengthened themselves in 1976 with the Austrian singer Fred Mühlböck. A stroke of luck, as it turned out later, because his charismatic demeanor and above all his singing skills made not only the live performances of the band unique, but also the studio productions.

Novalis newcomers may initially have difficulty immersing themselves in the world of Flossenengel, but once they get over the instrumental intro, which from today's perspective certainly seems kitschy (including the then highly innovative whale song), a wonderful, sad but sensitive story about the whale opens up for the listener Atlanto. Too petty record critics have been lamenting since the release of the disc that a whale has no scales and of course cannot speak either, but if you generously ignore such stylistic aberrations, more than 30 years after its creation there remains a fresh work that is also more than worth discovering. Incidentally, Novalis supported the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), founded in 1961, with this album and the subsequent spectacular stage shows.

Lutz Rahn (Hammond, keyboards) said about the LP in 1980: "With Flossenengel we made a record that dealt with the relationship between nature and humans. Man is strongly linked to his natural environment. If he destroys them, and he is well on the way to doing so, he will deprive himself of his livelihood. We want to use this campaign to draw attention to this problem.”

Musically, the band walks on well-known folky-progig paths, Lutz Rahn's keyboard and Hammond clouds waft spherically through the 46 minutes and spread a wide variety of moods. Basically, however, the strong guitar work of Detlef Job on the foundation of bassist Heino Schünzel and drummer Hartwig Biereichel dominates. Depending on the mood, Mühlböck's accordion and sometimes a flute join in, giving the album a pleasant tonal breadth.

Ultimately, I can only make one recommendation to all tolerant people interested in German-language music: Just risk buying an album from a time when today's green politics were still in their infancy and rubber truncheons were on the heads of young Greenpeace activists and nuclear power plants -Opponents danced. Flossenengel definitely wants to be understood as a protest against environmental destruction and overexploitation by humans.

That's not the only reason why the record is more relevant today than ever.

Germany

Progressive Rock, Symphonic Prog, Art Rock

It's the album where Novalis' music literally shifts in a different direction. It has similarities with the transition stage album Brandung. It has a different feel compared to the first albums. A different and interesting Novalis album, albeit not as good as them.
